Our Watford class has been running since 2009, making it the longest running swing dance night in the area. It’s full of lively characters, always quick to find the humour in every situation. Watford is also home to our monthly social dance, Harlem Nights, held on the first Saturday of every month.

You’ll find us eating too many biscuits on Wednesdays, 8-11pm at Beechen Grove Church, WD17 1JJ.

Please check our upcoming calendar (on the right) for the date of the next Watford class.

Doors open at 7:45pm. When you arrive, you will be greeted by our friendly crew who will guide you through ‘what’s what’. The night kicks off with a beginners class which lasts for 50mins.

You will have 10mins to practice and have some (free) refreshments whilst making new friends before the next class, which lasts a further 50mins. After this time we hope that you stay on, socialise and try out your new moves and dance with more experienced dancers! It’s a real fun night out, we think we’re the UK’s friendliest swing dance club!

We will focus primarily on Lindy Hop. However from time to time you will be introduced to a variety of other styles including 1920s Charleston, Balboa and Authentic Jazz. You can accelerate with workshops.

Adults of all ages come to dance, we have as many single people as we do couples. You don’t need a partner, and previous experience or special clothing. Just wear clothes you’re comfortable moving about in and shoes/trainers (not with large grips).

8:00pm – 8:50pm

A fresh Beginners – Improvers course runs every 7 weeks covering key fundamental moves, including the key 8 counts and Charleston steps. We rotate people around every few minutes, so don’t worry if you don’t have a partner.

At the end of your first class, you’ll leave with at least 3-5 simple moves that you can use straight away to impress your friends. By the end of 7 weeks, you may not be a world champion, but you’ll be able to dance a whole track.

Practice Time
8.50pm – 9.10pm

After the beginners class you will have time to practice those new moves, socialise with other dancers and get a feel for what swing dance is all about!

9:10pm – 10:00pm

Here you learn build upon the fundamental moves already learnt in the beginners class. We will teach you a number of variations, assuming you already know the basic Swing Outs, Lindy Turn, Circles and Charleston variations.

You will start to learn more challenging footwork and moves to enhance your social dancing, whilst improving your styling and lead/follow techniques.

Those that are visiting for their first time, are invited to join the review class, whilst the intermediate class is on.

Practice time
10:00pm onwards

This is a great opportunity to practice the moves learnt in class with lots of other dancers. We encourage all students to stay on and dance with other students. No new dancer will ever find themselves stuck watching from the sidelines. We find that people who do stay till the end seem to progress quicker and grasp new concepts and moves a lot more easier.

The music varies from the 1930s to some of today’s classic neo tracks. You’ll hear a good selection of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Chick Webb, Glenn Miller, Ella Fitzgerald, Slim & Slam, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, etc.

NB: In addition, you can gain further practice social dancing at Harlem Nights, Boogie Shack, Retro Sundays or any other JiveSwing class.

Beechen Grove Church, Clarendon Rd, Watford, Herts, WD17 1JJ.

Wednesday nights in Watford are held in a nice dance hall in the centre of Watford, next the Harlequin Centre. Parking at the church is very limited so we do advise using the free parking on nearby side roads or you can use the Sutton Car Park (Estcourt Road, WD17 2PS) directly behind the venue. You also have the option of The Palace, Queens or Kings Car Parks  which are opposite the venue.

Our Watford class attracts dancers from Amersham, Rickmansworth, Northwood, Ruislip, Harrow, Bushey and Stanmore.

A whole night of dancing costs £10 (£8 for full-time students with a valid ID showing full time education). If you want to come just for the social dancing (10pm onwards) it costs just £5.

We’re sure you’ll want to come more than once and attend a few socials. Why not get the JiveSwing Discount Card? For £80 (£64 students) you get 10 classes/socials for the price of 8!

Please see our SAFE SPACES policy here… http://www.jiveswing.com/safe-spaces-policy/

Please note there are a couple of quiet areas available at the venue for those who may need it throughout the evening.

We look forward to seeing you at JiveSwing Watford!
